Slave Portraiture in the Atlantic World is destined to become one of Angela Rosenthal's most enduring legacies. This edited collection is not only the result of her ethical and political commitments to scholarship, but also the expression of the invisible webs of love and friendship that often underwrite intellectual collaborations. On the occasion of the imminent and long-awaited publication of this book, co-editor Agnes Lugo-Ortiz will reflect upon the intellectual concerns that gave birth to the project and the inquiries it engages, the conceptual challenges that emerge from the juxtaposition of the seemingly antithetical notions of "slavery" and "portraiture," as well as the questions that remain to be pursued.
