Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres's interest in ancient figural sculpture is hinted at in his idiosyncratic use of shadow in his drawings for the multivolume luxury publication, the Musée Français (1803-1812). This paper considers that project through the lens of 18th-century philosophical considerations of sensory experience and evaluations of the particular aesthetic experience of sculpture.
