Awards and Prizes in Art History

William B. Jaffe Award

Established by Mr. and Mrs. Jaffe, this award recognizes "exceptional achievement in the major program of the Art Department; . . . marked by excellence in the study of art history; a demonstrated skill in independent scholarship and by sustained interest in the many opportunities and achievements of the Art Department."

William B. Jaffe died in 1972. He was a partner in the New York law firm of Shea, Gould, Climenko and Kramer, and he and Mrs. Jaffe were long-time patrons of Dartmouth's galleries.  They also supported New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and built an exceptional collection of their own.  Mr. Jaffe was awarded an honorary degree by the College in 1964 and was the father of Robert M. Jaffe '58 and the stepfather of John A. Friede '60 and Robert L.B. Friede '63.

Adelbert Ames Fine Arts Awards

In 1954 Dartmouth awarded Adelbert Ames an honorary Doctorate; his citation on that occasion reads in part: "Graduate of Harvard and her Law School, player of polo, practitioner of Boston law, painter, sculptor, soldier, sailor, inventor, and scientist, it was here as research professor of physiological optics that you discovered, designated and devised the treatment for the hitherto unrecognized defect of vision now known throughout the world as aniseikonia."  Professor Ames' work in optical research led to the creation of the Dartmouth Eye Institute.  He was deeply interested in the fine arts and served a vital role in the early planning of the Hopkins Center.
