Sor Juana and the Dangers of Intellectual Desire

Thursday, March 2, 2017
4:30pm – 5:30pm
Carpenter Hall 13
Intended Audience(s): Public
Categories: Arts

This talk examines Mexican painter Miguel Cabrera’s 1750 posthumous portrait of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz as a painted vindication of Mexico’s “Tenth Muse.” Dr. Villaseñor Black then positions this colonial image in conversation with contemporary Chicana
portrayals, asking, “Can the tools of Chicanx studies decolonize art history?”
